The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival opened on Tuesday, May 14th, with
filmmaker Greta Gerwig, known for “Barbie,” serving as the jury president. This
season marks a strong comeback of American cinema on the Croisette, highlighted
by the presence of Francis Ford Coppola and his new work, “Megalopolis.”
The 2024 selection appears to turn a new page, with Hollywood making a significant
return under the leadership of jury president Greta Gerwig. Leading the charge is
Francis Ford Coppola, renowned for “The Godfather,” competing with “Megalopolis,”
a monumental science fiction film starring Adam Driver as a visionary architect in a
corrupt world. Additionally, quietly returning is Paul Schrader, director of “Blue Collar”
(1978) and “Mishima” (1985), presenting “Oh, Canada,” co-written with Russell
Banks. Among other American films in competition, several are helmed by
international directors. Following “Poor Things,” Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos
reunites with actresses Emma Stone and Margaret Qualley for “Kinds of Kindness.”
The French selection showcases a diversity of genres and inspirations. Christophe
Honoré’s “Marcello Mio” evokes Marcello Mastroianni through his daughter Chiara’s
journey in Italy, starring Catherine Deneuve. “Diamant Brut,” Agathe Riedinger’s
debut film set in southern France, is placed in the Belgian cinematic vein by Thierry
Frémaux, reminiscent of the Dardenne brothers’ style. At the other end of the
spectrum, “L’amour ouf” marks Gilles Lellouche’s return behind the camera six years
after “Sink or Swim.” However, the most eagerly anticipated film is “Emilia Perez.”
Jacques Audiard’s new work promises a musical comedy set amidst drug cartels,
starring Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, and Edgar Ramirez. Cannes has previously
seen filmmakers like Aki Kaurismäki and Nanni Moretti grace the red carpet with their
dance steps.
